Community Awareness Initiatives: Guest Speakers

The Pacific Tsunami Museum (PTM) hosts guest speakers for special functions. The speakers typically relate their tsunami experiences and help to further our mission of education and awareness.

Ray Tabata talk

Ray Tabata delivered a talk at PTM regarding recovery efforts and spirit in Japan after the devastating tsunami of 2011.

Ray Tabata

In January of 2013, Ray Tabata, (retired) University of Hawai'i Sea Grant Extension, delivered a talk regarding his experiences related to the 2011 Japan tsunami recovery. Ray had visited the Tohoku area to see how people were progressing with recovery efforts, especially the volunteer programs. He was totally impressed by the spirit of area residents and the volunteers that came to help out from all over Japan.

Ray had visited a number of cities where there was nothing left except a few concrete buildings with windows blown out. But the focus of his presentation was about how Tohoku communities have pulled together to recover and rebuild. The presentation at PTM was of interest to individuals involved with disaster preparedness, business owners, and homeowners. He described how Tohoku provides lessons for us here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Kimina Lyall

In 2007, Australian journalist Kimina Lyall gave a presentation at PTM regarding her riveting experience in Thailand during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. On December 26, 2004, a rupture in the Earth's crust triggered a tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean. Killing between 230,000 and 300,000 people, the tsunami was one of the most destructive natural disasters in history.

Dr. Walter Dudley, PTM Scientific Advisor, was in Thailand researching tsunamis and interviewing survivors when he met Kimina and encouraged her to come and visit PTM. Kimina's talk was entitled "Tsunamis — terror and truth; important lessons for scientists, educators and future survivors". The presentation included illustrations, her personal story of survival, and lessons learned. After the talk, Kimina spoke with attendees and signed copies of her book documenting her experience, Out of the Blue; Facing the Tsunami. This book is still available at the PTM store.
