DESCRIPTION:The 36th Annual Young At Art Juried Exhibition 2024\nSaturday\, March 2\, 2024 – 10:00am to Friday\, March 29\, 2024 – 4:00pm\n\nSponsored by East Hawaii Cultural Center and the Hawai‘i District Department of Education \nThe Young at Art annual juried exhibition celebrates National Youth Art Month by recognizing the excellence\, creativity and originality of K-12 students on Hawai’i Island in all public\, charter\, and private schools\, as well as home-schooled students. \nYoung At Art is a community-based art experience. 221 artworks will be showcased at 20 locations around the island\, aiming to bring more visibility to Youth Art Month (March) and the importance of arts education in schools.  The exhibit will be on view at multiple locations across Hawai‘i Island. Locations include small businesses\, public libraries\, County facilities and more. \nThe Pacific Tsunami Museum was choose as one of the locations!\nMade possible with support from the 2024 County of Hawai‘i Waiwai grant program. \nAdditional program and exhibition locations will be available March 2nd.

Cindi Preller will kick off this special series by delving into the science and the historical significance of the 1964 Good Friday Great Alaska Quake and the questions “Why didn’t this Earthquake impact Hawaii more?” Discover the stories behind this seismic event and its lasting implications for coastal communities. \n RSVP before March 28th to receive a FREE Ticket  – Click here \nTicket increase to $5 day of\, except for PTM Members!\n \nDoors open at 4:30 PM\, and the talk begins at 5:00 PM and will run approximately for 1 hour. \nGraphic images may be shown\, but warned ahead of time. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to be part of our special anniversary series. \n  \nDetailed information about the event below \nThe 1964 Good Friday Alaska earthquake\, one of the most powerful recorded in North American history\, struck on March 27\, 1964. With a magnitude of 9.2\, it remains the second-largest earthquake ever recorded worldwide. The quake triggered a devastating tsunami that caused widespread destruction along the Alaskan coastline and beyond\, reaching as far as California and Hawaii. The disaster claimed over 100 lives and caused extensive damage to infrastructure\, highlighting the profound impact of seismic events on coastal communities. \nSpeaker Information \n Cindi Preller\, Executive Director at the Pacific Tsunami Museum\, will give a detailed talk with highlights of the science behind the disaster\, survival stories and recovery. She will also address the question “Why didn’t this earthquake impact the Hawaiian Island more? \nWith a wealth of experience in tsunami awareness and education\, Cindi has held significant roles including Senior Duty Scientist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu\, Hawaii\, where she monitored tsunamigenic earthquakes globally. Previously\, she served as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the International Tsunami Information Center and Tsunami Program Manager for the National Weather Service’s Alaska Region. Cindi’s expertise extends to national committees and advisory boards\, and she is a sought-after speaker internationally. With a background in geology\, physics\, and education\, Cindi brings a unique blend of knowledge and passion to her role. \n
