Archive Orders & Inquiries
The Pacific Tsunami Museum (PTM) archive preserves tsunami-related resources and offers reproduction services for personal and commercial use. Fees apply to these services. Most materials can be reproduced, except those restricted by copyright or donation. Our archive includes still images, survivor videos and transcripts, original 1946 video footage, and scientific papers, much of which has been digitized.
Images for Publications
To inquire about specific topics, contact the archivist to discuss your needs. A selection of low-resolution thumbnails can be emailed for review.
Call (808) 935-0926 or email admin@tsunami.org to schedule an appointment or discuss your request.
Each image request incurs a research fee and a usage fee. These fees support the preservation of collections and archivist processing time. Research covers locating items, copyright clearance, sending previews, providing captions and credits, and sizing images. Usage covers one-time commercial publication.
- Digital Image (run up to 5,000): $75 ($55 research fee + $20 usage fee)
- Digital Image (run over 5,000): $100 ($55 research fee + $45 usage fee)
- Digital Images: $55 each
- Transcript: $0.50 per page
After finalizing selections, an invoice will be issued for payment by VISA, Mastercard, or check. Once payment and the signed “Archival License Agreement” are received, high-resolution images will be provided via Google Drive with captions and credits. PTM retains copyright; images cannot be reused for other projects without permission.
Documentaries
The Museum holds the copyright for original 1946 tsunami footage. To use still images in documentaries, contact the archivist to request a database search and receive thumbnail images for review.
- 1946 tsunami film footage: $40 per second
- Tsunami survivor video interview footage: $15 per second
Fees cover one-time broadcast. Additional fees apply for rebroadcast rights (30% surcharge for 5 years, 50% for 10 years). These rights allow unlimited showings within the chosen time frame for U.S. and international broadcasts. Once selections are made, the signed “Archival License Agreement” and payment must be received before footage is sent.
Once the Museum’s signed form and payment are received, the video footage will be sent. Images will be sent through google drive. Captions and photo credits will be provided.
These broadcast rights include national and international publication and television/cable video broadcast.
If rebroadcast rights are purchased, this provides for unlimited showings within that time limit.
The licensee may use the material in the U.S. and abroad, for standard and non-standard television, audiovisual, and home video media for the number of years specified in the usage agreement.
Filming in the Museum
A signed agreement and a $100 fee are required for commercial filming in the Museum. Filming is restricted to background scenes only. Close-ups of exhibits or recordings of kiosk videos are prohibited. For use of individual exhibit images, contact the archivist to discuss availability and fees.
Processing Time
Requests are typically processed within two weeks. Rush orders, if approved, take 1-3 days and incur an additional 40% fee. Shipping and handling charges are separate.
Post-Project Requirements
After publication or broadcast, a copy must be sent to the Museum archive as outlined in the “Archival License Agreement.”
