Orders for Commercial Use
In addition to acting as a storage and preservation facility for tsunami-related resources, The Pacific Tsunami Museum (PTM) archive offers reproduction services for both personal and commercial use. There are fees associated with this service. Except for items that are restricted by donation or copyright, many of our resources may be reproduced. We archive still images, survivor videos and transcripts, original 1946 video footage, and scientific papers. As much as possible, archives have been converted to digital format.
Images for Publications
There is a selection of images available for viewing on this website under “Tsunami Images”. You may choose to order one of these if it is suitable. However, if you are interested in a specific topic, you need to discuss what you are looking for with the archivist, so that the database can be researched and recommendations made. A selection of low-resolution thumbnail images can be emailed for your perusal. Call (808) 935-0926 or email the archivist at assoc@tsunami.org to discuss your needs or to schedule an appointment.
Each image ordered has a research fee and a usage fee. The fees help pay for the preservation and maintenance of our collections, as well as archivist time to process your request. The research fee includes time to find, ensure copyright clearance, send a thumbnail preview, provide captions and credits, and appropriately size the image resolution. The usage fee covers one-time commercial publication.
All images are copyright to the Pacific Tsunami Museum (PTM) and may not be used for subsequent projects or given to others.
Once final image selections are requested, an invoice will be generated with the total amount due. This amount may be paid by VISA, Mastercard, or check. PTM does not accept bank transfers.

After images are selected, the Museum’s “Archival License Agreement” form will be sent to the requestor to be filled in, signed, and returned for signature by the Museum Director. The Museum does not sign forms generated by requestor institutions. Once the Museum’s signed form and payment are received, the high-resolution images will be sent by email (up to 6 MB). Captions and photo credits will be provided.
Images and Video for Documentaries
The Museum holds the copyright for some original 1946 tsunami footage. A screening DVD of this footage is available with a $100 non-refundable deposit that will be applied to your purchase. This DVD can be sent to you using your FEDEX number.

The usage fee is for one-edition, one-time broadcast use only. Rebroadcast rights may be selected for the original program for 5 years at a surcharge of 30% or for 10 years at a surcharge of 50% of the total usage fees. The Museum does not grant rights in perpetuity.
Once the Museum’s signed form and payment are received, the video footage will be sent. If images have been ordered, they will be sent by email (up to 6 MB). Captions and photo credits will be provided.
These broadcast rights include national and international publication and television/cable video broadcast.
If rebroadcast rights are purchased, this provides for unlimited showings within that time limit.
The licensee may use the material in the U.S. and abroad, for standard and non-standard television, audiovisual, and home video media for the number of years specified in the usage agreement.
Time Frame for Requests
The archivist has many duties, and requests are handled on a time-available basis. Standard processing time is two weeks. Rush orders are subject to approval; if approved, allow one to three days for processing. There is an additional charge of 40% of the total amount for rush orders. Shipping and handling charges are not included in reproduction costs.
Post-Project
After the publication is published or video documentary is aired, the “Archival License Agreement” provides that a copy be sent to the Museum archive.
Filming in the Museum
An agreement needs to be signed in order to film in the Museum, and a $100 fee applies for commercial enterprise. Filming must be of background scenes only. Close-up videos or photos of exhibit displays or recording of kiosk videos are not permitted. Although the Museum has permission to use all of the images on display, we do not necessarily hold copyright for all of them. Any proposed use of individual images must be negotiated by appointment with the archivist as to availability and usage cost.
